English Language Arts covers many areas including reading of fiction and non-fiction, poetry, writing, vocabulary enrichment, and grammar to name a few. We will have units that incorporate most areas as well as working on specialized skills.
READING- I ask that each student read 15-20 minutes a night or at least 1 hour and thirty minutes a week. We will be go to media center to check out books but I also have a classroom library. As many of you know, we are requiring 2 books this quarter to be read. We have asked that students take a reading counts test. There will be different times that students will be allowed to read or work on activity or take a test on their book. We will also be reading articles, short stories, novels, and poems this year in class.
WRITING- Students will be writing goals, journal entries, book reflections, as well as summaries and argumentative writing each quarter.
VOCABULARY- Students will be given 5 stems each week. They will study and work on the stem and meaning as well as vocabulary words that include that stem. They will have a quiz each Friday.
GRAMMAR- This will often be included in our Reading and Writing Units. We also have Monday Mistakes where we edit a paragraph.
Students do need a 3 subject notebook divided into Reading, Vocabulary and Writing sections.
We will often have cooperative learning groups and work stations.
We are going to have an awesome 8th grade year!
